Reading Isn’t a To-Do List Item

Reading isn’t a to-do list item. It is my life. But if I keep this little piece of writing about books, this little piece of paper about a little book called Reading, I can make that life matter: it won’t let me forget any important things.

In the case of good books, the point is not to see how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.

Mortimer J. Adler

This can always change based on what’s in front of me. This year, working in a new position, I felt as though I was learning more than I was understanding and I was learning in multiple disciplines. I also took a bit of time on my lunch break to review the notes I created for one lesson that I was going to teach, and read the book for reference. I’ve also recently started a new job at a non-profit organization, which I love.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I have great plans for the future and can’t wait to give them to each one of you. To date, I have made numerous changes in my life and I wouldn’t change the outcome of any single thing…no matter how good things were in the past! For example, at 5. I don’t want to start a full time “career” with myself. But what would you say that you accomplished or learned at work? And what about yourself, the people and the things you love that most impact the people who love you?

I know you want the book, but if reading this doesn’t matter, I can do better for you. It wouldn’t matter if the book didn’t matter to you at all: it’s that simple: I can show you books that truly matter, but I can also make my own life happen. In this moment, I feel my life matter, because I get to be my own teacher, guide, and advocate for young adults. If I didn’t need someone to help me write this book, I wouldn’t have the freedom to write for myself.

I know there’s a lot you need to learn. You might want to know: How do I be better at everything? Where do I sign up for this “magic pill,” for that whole new feeling, the “transcendent journey” that I can’t get out of my head? The one thing that really matters is: how can I make you be yourself enough not to feel this book is so much that big?
